On 16th April, 1916, 24th London of 142 Brigade, 47th Division moved into front line trenches near Viller-au-Bois, to the north of Arras. The battalion diary records that 17th April started quietly but then at 10am, two heavy mortars opened up on a German sap in an attempt to destroy the wire there. This of course led to retaliation which was almost immediate when the enemy targeted the positions of 24th London with all types of artillery fire. As a result 3 men were killed, on of whom was Joseph Bond. |
